ECP train brake signal fault conditions
The ECP system has many advantages over pneumatically controlled trains. Cheaper, has fewer moving parts, is fail-safe, allows train monitoring, has much faster application and release, provides more even train braking, and offers greater train brake control. However, these advantages come at a price. Higher technology requires greater understanding, awareness, and care from maintainers.
The system can be highly reliable if it is properly tested, inspected, and maintained.
Moisture and dirt can allow the ECP control signal to short to ground, causing it to ‘leak’ into a ground point on another train. Poor connections can cause signal reflection, weakening the signal.
These faults interrupt polling of the train, and if a critical poll goes unanswered, the train will fail safe and apply the brakes. If severe enough, it can cause the system to drop out. In each case, the train will fail safe and apply the train brakes.
Areas to check include connections and wiring, plug fit, cleanliness, and effective sealing of control and terminal boxes. Latent fault conditions, such as moisture marks or dirt around cable connections caused by faulty seals, can cause apparent intermittent faults that do not show during testing.
Rail wheel interaction produces a fine metallic dust. If this settles across terminal connections, it can allow the control signal to escape.
A 5-volt leak along a train is enough to let the control signal travel 3km along the rail or through the ground or bridge structures, depending on the resistance.
Identifying these conditions through testing and inspection is critical to ECP maintenance. Understanding fault and failure modes, and how the system interacts with the locomotive, train, and pneumatic systems, is important for fault finding and correction.
